I would like to give everyone a heads up on this bill submitted in May of this year called the “No Child Left Unimmunized Against Influenza Act of 2009” or H.R. 2596. It is meant to use the public school system as a way to mass vaccinate school children from the influenza virus, this would include H1N1 (swine flu), which is quite controversial right now as to the safety of the vaccination itself is in question. The bill says it would be “To authorize the Secretary of Health and Human Services to carry out a demonstration program to test the feasibility of using the Nation’s elementary and secondary schools as influenza vaccination centers.” I think this is something that should be left up to the child’s physician and carried out in a medical office, not an educational setting. I for one hope this does not make it out of the committee. If it does, we have the following people (sponsor and cosponsors) to thank: Raymond Green-D, Bruce Braley-D, Eliot Engel-D, and Tim Murphy-R.
